The ABQ course Mathematics is a prerequisite for teaching mathematics in the intermediate division and serves a diverse group of previously qualified teachers. Candidates include teachers who are making divisional changes, plan to move into administrative positions, are new to the Ontario school system and teachers interested in engaging in ongoing professional learning.
Candidates come to the course with a background in this subject matter. Critical to the delivery of intermediate division subjects is the ability of teachers to ensure positive learning experiences for students. Teachers are skilled at combining their knowledge of adolescent development and learning with their understanding of subject matter to facilitate active student engagement. The course focuses on the discipline and theory underpinning the study of the particular subject. As an ABQ, this course also explores the development of adolescents; program planning and delivery issues; the elementary and secondary school environments; and other issues related to teaching and learning in Grades 7 to 10. At least one half of the course concentrates on subject specific curriculum.
