The English as a Second Language course focuses on the following key areas: factors influencing second-language acquisition; the acculturation process, stages of second-language acquisition for ESL students, stages of second-language acquisition and literacy development for ELD students, roles of the school, classroom teacher and ESL teacher in supporting ESL and ELD students, accommodations and modifications that support students from a variety of linguistic, ethnocultural and educational backgrounds in their participation in program areas, assessment, evaluation and reporting for ESL and ELD students and curriculum guidelines and resources established by the Ministry of Education.

This English as a Second Language course provides a more extensive study of the ESL/ELD learner in the classroom. This course is open to all teachers in both the elementary and secondary divisions and serves a widely diverse group of previously qualified teachers. Candidates include teachers who are interested in expanding the basic knowledge necessary to enhance the learning of ESL and ELD learners at all grade levels and in all subject areas, and those who are committed to ongoing professional learning.

Successful candidates will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for the Additional Basic Qualification for English as a Second Language, Part 2.

OCT Certificate of Qualification

Prerequisites:
1. OCT Certificate of Qualification.
2. Successful completion of ESL - Part 1.
3. Proof that the qualification is noted on their Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification.
4. Evidence of at least one year of successful teaching experience in Ontario certified by the appropriate supervisory officer or proof of at least one year of successful teaching experience outside Ontario certified by the appropriate supervisory officer by submitting a Certificate of Teaching Experience
