How do I apply?
Applications and Admissions to all Faculty of Education Graduate programs are done through the UOIT Graduate Studies Office. Applications are filled out online at
www.gradstudies.uoit.ca .
On the application for the MEd Program, I am asked to choose between a Portfolio option and a Project option. What is the difference?
The
MEd Graduate Research Project provides students with the opportunity,
under the supervision of a faculty member, to integrate and synthesize
knowledge gained throughout their program of study. The chosen topic
will be dependent on the area of specialization of the student, using
resources normally available on campus. The Research Project is worth 6 credits.
In the MEd Graduate Portfolio, students
will collect authentic evidence that documents their development and
learning over the course of their graduate program. Students will
select and organize relevant artifacts to create a web based portfolio
which reflects the course-based and extra-course activities related to
their program and professional goals. They will share their portfolios
with peers during an online presentation. The Portfolio is worth 3 credits.
Why do I have to choose now?
For those students who are applying to the MEd with the Project option, you will also need to include a description of either your specific topic or area of research interest as part of the application's "Statement of Interest".
If accepted to the program, this description will allow the Faculty of Education to ensure that the proper supervisor will be assigned to you. In addition to supervisory capacities, indicating your area of research on your application ensures that you will be considered for any research assistantships (RA's) that may be available in that area. As research assistantships are included (when available) in the student's offer of admission, this information is needed at the application stage.
I would like to apply for the MA* in Education. Is there anything special I need to include in my application?
As the MA* includes a Graduate Thesis, you will also need to include a description of either your specific
topic or area of research interest as part of the application's
"Statement of Interest".
If accepted to the program, this description will allow the Faculty of
Education to ensure that the proper supervision for your thesis will be
assigned to you. In addition to supervisory capacities, indicating your
area of research on your application ensures that you will be
considered for any research assistantships (RA's) that may be available
in that area. As research assistantships are included (when available)
in the student's offer of admission, this information is needed at the
application stage.
What is the application deadline? If I miss it, can I still apply?
The application deadline (normally Feb. 15th) has been
extended until April 15, 2010 as long as spaces are available.
Do you have a January start?
No, the
M.Ed. and M.A. programs have only two intakes each year; July and September.
Yes, the Graduate Diploma program may be started in any of the four terms.
I am trying to make plans for the year. What dates should I know?
Please
click here to be taken to our Important Dates page.
I have submitted my application. When will I know if I am accepted or not?
All applications received by February 15, 2010 will be assessed together after this date. The review and assessment process can take 8 to 10 weeks. Applications received after February 15th will be assessed and reviewed on a one by one basis as long as spaces remain available.
If you're application was submitted prior to February 15th, 2010 and you have not had a reply by May 2010, please contact the Graduate Studies Office (contact info above).
How many courses do I have to take in each term?
Maximum course load depends upon your student status. As a full-time student, you may take as many or as few courses in each term as your personal situation allows for, as long as you finish your courses within the allotted time frame (3 years for the full-time and 6 years for part-time).
It is recommended that full-time students take no more than 2 to 3 courses
per term(depending on the term); however, students may take four courses per term (if available) with the
faculty's approval.
Some students will opt to take a semester off, if their work or personal situations would make studying at that time difficult, some will steadily take one or two courses each term until finished, while others may decide to take the maximum number of courses each term. Often, which courses are available in a particular term are a deciding factor.
Please note that part-time students are allowed to take a maximum of two courses per term.
What are the terms and how are classes scheduled?
The Graduate Programs offered through the Faculty of Education have four terms each year.
The fall term starts in early September to ends in mid December. The winter term starts in early January and ends in mid April. Courses in both the fall and winter terms are scheduled for 3 hours, one night a week. The spring term starts in early May and ends in late June. Courses are scheduled for either 2 hours a night, two nights a week or 4 hours a night, one night a week. The summer term is the month of July. Courses are scheduled daily (Monday to Friday) for 2 hours each day either in the morning or the afternoon.
When and where are the courses held?
As of spring 2010 (May),
ALL courses will be held completely online. Should an optional in-person class or function be offered, it will be held at the Faculty of Education building, located at 11 Simcoe St. North in downtown Oshawa.
Please note that the Faculty of Education is NOT on the main UOIT campus.
All courses require that the student is at their computer and free from distraction for the duration of the class. Summer courses (July) are held during the day, while fall, winter and spring courses are held in the evening hours.
What is the tuition cost?
The graduate programs (MED, MA and Graduate diploma) are fee per course programs. Whether you attend part time or full time, the fee for the 2009-2010 academic year is $950 per course plus graduate student ancillary fees. Ancillary fees are $375.63 per term for full time graduate students and $195.50 per term for part time graduate students.
What careers are available for someone with an MEd degree?
The Graduate programs in Education are designed specifically to prepare students to be future leaders and specialists in learning and technology who can meet the needs of their constituents in this social context.
For example, elementary or secondary teachers and principals who want to offer leadership in projects involving digital technologies in their schools and school boards, college level instructors and individuals from professional fields such as nursing or from areas that are involved in professional training and education or anyone with a personal or professional interest in teaching ans learning in a digital context can develop a highly sought after expertise in this field.
This can lead such individuals to careers as Online or distance learning specialists in colleges or universities, directors or coordinators of e-learning services, e-learning designers, project leaders for boards and higher education institutions.
For some individuals, these degrees can ultimately lead students to consider doctoral studies and research positions in this new and rapidly developing field.
