Shirley is a retired secondary educator from the Durham District School Board who is entering her third year with the Faculty of Education. Although she began her teaching career in North York, she spent most of her career in Durham. She taught high school science, in four different schools, and was also a department head (science). During her last 12 years, Shirley enjoyed administrative duties as a Vice Principal in two schools and as a high school Principal.
Beginning in 1990, Shirley took a leave of absence from teaching, when she served four years as the President of the Durham District OSSTF. Negotiating and maintaining collective agreements provided her with valuable experience for her role as an administrator.
Along with her experience teaching science, Shirley has also taught cooperative education and has her specialist in special education. As an administrator, one of her main interests was the development of programs for at-risk students such as credit recovery classes.
While employed by the Durham Board, Shirley was involved in interviewing teacher candidates at Faculties of Education across Ontario and was a member of the Durham Board team present at the UOIT job fair.
Shirley is currently teaching Contemporary Education Practice to both the Primary/Junior Candidates and the year three concurrent students. She is also teaching Intermediate/Senior Core Curriculum Methods as well as Field Experience to the first year concurrent education students.
