Candidates are selected based on a combination of academic criteria, experience and references. All of the following components are needed to be offered admission to the BEd program at UOIT:
1. Academic Requirements
2. Personal Profile
3. Reference Letters
4. Interview
5. Language Proficiency Test
6. Considerations for Students with Disabilities
1. Academic Admission Requirements:
Note for 2010/11 applicants: Each Candidate must have received the required undergraduate degree by July 1, 2010.
| Primary/Junior program |
Intermediate/Senior program |
|
- Applicants will hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized university, with a minimum overall academic average of 70 per cent (B- or 2.7 GPA) in their best 10 full-year, or best 20 half-year courses completed. Preference will be given to students with four-year honours degrees. Because Primary/Junior teachers deal with a wide range of subject areas, it is desirable that applicants have a broad academic background. In assessing the academic breadth of Primary/Junior applicants, the Faculty of Education gives preference to candidates who have one or more 3-credit hour undergraduate or graduate courses in the subject groupings listed below:
- English/Linguistics/Languages
- Mathematics/Statistics
- Physical Sciences/Life Sciences
- Visual Arts/Music/Drama
- Social Sciences/Humanities
Clearly, very few applicants will have coursework in all of the above areas; however, the more areas an applicant has covered, the stronger the application. |

2. Personal Profile
Candidates applying are required to submit a personal profile that outlines their skills and related work experience. Each candidate must prepare this profile individually without assistance.
The personal profile and reference letter instructions are a part of our Supplemental Application Package. Click Here for more information.
3. Reference Letters
You must submit two reference letters - one professional and one academic. Your two referees will complete the letters and return them to you in a sealed envelope. For the academic reference, one from a professor is preferred, but you may submit two professional references if you cannot obtain an academic reference. For the professional reference, it is most helpful to have a reference from someone who has seen you teach or volunteer in a classroom. Your referees also have the option of attaching a letter to the form rather than filling it out. Please contact the Registrar's Office by e-mail at admissions@uoit.ca if you have questions.
The personal profile and reference letter instructions are a part of our Supplemental Application Package. Click Here for more information.
4. Interview
If you are a successful applicant, you will be invited to an interview with principals and teachers from local school boards. On arrival, you will receive a case study and then you will discuss it in your interview. Note: You need to bring picture ID in order to participate.
5. English Proficiency
All applicants are required to give evidence of their oral and written proficiency in English. This requirement can be satisfied with one of the following criteria:
-
A candidate's mother tongue or first language is English. OR
-
A candidate has studied full time for at least three years (or equivalent in part-time studies) in a university where the language of instruction and examination was English. OR
-
A candidate has achieved the required proficiency on one of the tests in English language acceptable to UOIT.
See English Language Proficieny information on the UOIT main website . [This page opens in a new window.]
6. Considerations for Students with Disabilities
We expect that the marks for students with disabilities, who received disability-related accommodations in high school or during a previous degree or diploma program, will accurately reflect their academic ability. However, if the student was not accommodated for all or part of their high school or previous diploma or degree program, or believes there are extenuating circumstances, related to disability, which negatively impacted their grades they may be eligible for consideration on this basis.
Applicants with disabilities who meet the minimum published admission requirements (have achieved the minimum average and prerequisite courses) and wish consideration for admission on the basis of their disability must follow the process outlined on the website linked below. All disability related documents must be sent to the UOIT Registrar's office within three weeks of application. Once the applicant meets the minimum published admissions average, this documentation will be forwarded to the Centre for Students with Disabilities for review. Note: All disability related documents must be sent to the UOIT Registrar's office within three weeks of application.
