Added July 9, 2010, 2:00 P.M.: POLICE CHECK UPDATE:
There have been no updates on the situation at OESC. Teacher Candidates, please complete your Vulnerable Sector Criminal Screening at a police service where you reside.
NOTE: We realize our literature indicates the deadline to meet the police check requirement is August 18th. Under normal circumstances, we use this date as a guideline and we try to have all police checks completed and collected by that time to allow for any follow up or delays. However, considering the current challenges with processing checks this year, do not feel pressured to have your check in by August 18th. Please do submit your completed check to us as soon as you receive it and as long as we have your check
before you go out on placement, you are fine.
Attention Teacher Candidates who reside in Toronto: We are still awaiting clearance from Toronto Police Services for you to submit your background/vulnerable sector check application. Please know that we are in regular contact with TPS to check on our status and we will notify you by email and via a post on this webpage as soon as we have clearance for you to go ahead.
Be advised that as part of the process of applying for your check at Toronto Police Service, you will need to take with you an application/waiver form signed by UOIT. It needs to be an original form and signature, so we have completed our section of the form for each of you and are mailing your form directly to your home address on
Wednesday, July 14th. Remember, you will need to take your completed form with you when you go to Toronto Police Service to apply for your check. The cost of the check is $16.95.
REMEMBER to wait for an email confirmation from the Practicum Office that we have clearance for you to proceed with your police check!
IMPORTANT reminder for Toronto Teacher Candidates!!! To apply for your check, you must go to the Toronto Police Service office located at 40 College Street with photo ID.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Practicum Office.

Added June 8, 2010, 2:30 P.M.: Criminal Reference Check Requirements and Process
In order to go out on Field placement, you must obtain a police background check from the Police Services office in your home community( (ie. the police station in the community where you reside). For example, if you live in Oshawa, you should go to the Durham Regional Police Office to have your check done.
You should request a Criminal Reference Check AND a Vulnerable Sector Screening. You need BOTH of these in order to be cleared to go out on your B.Ed. practice teaching placements.
As soon as you have received your completed police check documentation from Police Services, please send a copy (or fax) of your documentation to the Faculty of Education Practicum Office (905-721-1707). Keep the original in a safe place, as you will need to have it with you at all times when you are out on placement.
Please DO NOT DELAY in getting your police check done! In some cases, processing times may take up to 8 weeks, so we strongly urge you to get your check done as soon as possible. Fees may vary by Police Service.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR TEACHER CANDIDATES LIVING IN TORONTO ONLY: Due to an unforeseen administrative delay, we are awaiting clearance from Toronto Police Services for you to submit your background/vulnerable sector checks. We are expecting confirmation very soon and we will notify Teacher Candidates by email as soon as we have clearance for you to go ahead. In the meantime, please do not proceed with your police checks until you have confirmation from us.

Instructors also have a similar laptop make and model, along with software. This ensures consistency for all technical and academic elements related to teaching and learning.
UOIT is pleased to announce the Student Laptop Ownership Program for students who are graduating or completing their final year of studies. We believe this program will be of great interest to our students and will give added value to their experience at the institution and participation in the Mobile Learning Program. Software licenses and laptop ownership are registered to the institution until ownership transfer is completed upon successful graduation and payment of all fees.
As part of the Mobile Learning Program, B. Ed students will have the opportunity to participate in the Mobile Computing laptop ownership program by purchasing out the lease portion of their laptop. All B.Ed students will pay a Mobile Learning fee of $1344.88 prior to picking up their laptop in August 2010. In order to take part in the laptop ownership program, you will be required to pay a supplemental buyout fee of $559. By paying the ownership fee, you will be eligible to own the laptop that you have been using throughout the year, so long as you successfully graduate from the program.
