Application Process
Application procedures vary by school board with respect to deadlines, process and expectations. It is very important that you track these deadlines by visiting school board web sites to learn about their specific procedures.
Most boards in the area have a combination of electronic and paper requirements for your submission. In contrast, York Region District School Board and Peel District School Board solicit solely in an online environment. York Region allows you to upload up to two attachments (i.e. practice teaching reports). Peel will allow you to track your entire recruitment process online.
Note, that even in an online environment, it is very important that you customize your cover letter to reflect that school board's philosophy and your interest in working for them. Many of our past graduates believe that it was often their cover letter and not the resume that earned them the interview.
Students are also advised to conduct a broad job search by applying to multiple employers. If you only apply to your local school board, you are greatly limiting your chances of employment. Also remember to consider independent / private schools, international teaching opportunities, tutoring, corporate settings and so on.
Students who are interested in employers other than school boards are also advised to start their job search early, typically around the same time as the school boards (mid-January). This will allow for sufficient time to make contacts, determine needs and submit applications.
