UOIT offers a five-year concurrent Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Education degree program focusing on teaching in the Intermediate/Senior divisions (Grades 7 to 12). This concurrent program enables students to pursue their BSc (Hons) degree while also completing their B.Ed. degree.
In co-operation with the Faculty of Science (
science.uoit.ca), this program is offered whereby candidates complete education courses concurrently with their science courses. Graduates will hold a BSc (Hons)/BEd degree. Students in the five-year program will complete all the required coursework for a BSc (Hons) degree, including a minimum of 10 courses in their first teaching subject and six courses in their second teaching subject.
Teachable subjects include: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics
See
Program Maps for a listing of suggested courses to take to complete various majors/minors as they relate to teachable subjects.
Students will be required to complete 106 days of field experience and practicum in local elementary and secondary schools. Two weeks (10 days) in an elementary school at end of first year; three weeks (15 days) in a secondary school at end of second year and four weeks (20 days) in an alternative placement at end of third year
The emphasis on technology in teaching is a defining element of the faculty's concurrent program. Students use technology in both their science and education classes so that they will understand how to integrate technology into classroom practice.
