International Field Experience
Preparing pre-service teachers to respond effectively to the changing demographics of their student population has become an essential requirement in the education of new teachers. Thus, the opportunity to embrace a range of cross-cultural experiences allows Teacher Candidates to expand their personal realities and perspectives, to step outside of their comfort zones so they are able to include these learning experiences in their own teaching practices in a way that conventional practica could never achieve.
Eligibility
International placements are a privilege and are subject to the approval of the Dean of Education and the International Projects Committee. Once all documentation is submitted, the International Projects Committee will assess the suitability of the applicant based on the criteria below. Students should be aware that the International Projects Committee will consult with Faculty members, Faculty Advisors, and other members of the Faculty of Education in determining the suitability of the applicant.
Criteria
1) Applicants for an international placement must meet the general eligibility requirements for practicum placement as outlined in the Field Experience Handbook.
2) To be considered for a placement outside Canada, Teacher Candidates must be approved by the Dean of Education and the International Projects Committee. The Teacher Candidate is required to demonstrate the following:
a. Satisfactory academic performance: The Teacher Candidate must have maintained a high academic standing in all courses and have progressed through the Program with no conditions.
b. Successful completion of previous placements: The Teacher Candidate must maintain a minimum level 3 standing in each of their Field Experience placements prior to the international placement.
c. The Teacher Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and professional skills, including tact, diplomacy, and well-developed judgement skills as documented on previous fieldwork evaluations and observed by Faculty and Faculty Advisors.
d. Documented good health: A note from your family physician indicating general good health for international travel. Proof of required inoculations must be submitted prior to departure.
NOTE: While an International Placement is very interesting, it is also challenging. For Teacher Candidates who have been successful in previous placements, it can provide an excellent opportunity for further growth and development. Teacher Candidates who have experienced difficulties in prior placements and/or in their studies may find that these difficulties may recur when abroad.
